Long before he stepped up to make his pick during Tuesday’s Mon Valley Independent Summer Basketball League boys draft, Kevin Kovach knew exactly whose name he’d be announcing.
The former McKeesport coach and current leader of Union Cleaners went with a familiar Class 5A opponent, selecting Laurel Highlands junior Brandon Davis with the No. 1 overall pick in this year’s draft at Cedarbrook Golf Course.
Davis, a 6-2 guard, became the second straight Mustangs player to be taken first overall. Teammate Rodney Gallagher III was selected No. 1 by BeeGraphix before earning MVP honors last summer.
“He has the top skill that you have to have in basketball right now and that is being able to shoot. He can shoot on the move, shoot in space, shoot wide open and shoot with a hand in his face,” Kovach said of Davis. “He goes to the basket and has a good basketball IQ. Being that we have a totally retooled roster, I don’t care how he adapts to them because they’re going to adapt to him. He’ll be the leader and he’ll be the guy who gets the ball for us, I don’t think that will be a secret.”
Davis joins a Union Cleaners team that had just two players remaining on its roster prior to the draft. South Allegheny sophomore Jeston Beatty and Beth-Center senior Ruben Miller were the only returning players after Union Cleaners went winless last summer.
“I just can’t wait to compete and play hard,” Davis said. “They’re going to get a leader. All I wanna do is win.”
