Things are starting to heat up ahead of the start of the Mon Valley Independent Summer Basketball League as the Girls division hosted the first of two meet and greets at Court Time Sports Center in Elizabeth Township Monday night.
There will be a second meet and greet Wednesday.
Returning players were reunited with teams and new players got acclimated with their teammates and coaches, which is the purpose of the event.
In previous years, the players would show up on the first night of games with no prior interaction with teammates or coaches.
That made it difficult to acclimate, according to girls division commissioner Chad Carroto.
“This is a good way for the kids to get to know each other,” Carroto said. “All these girls want to see each other; they haven’t seen each other since last year and they want to do this.”
The teams went through some basic drills, shot around and participated in scrimmages to prepare for opening night on Monday. That is a big benefit for new and younger players.
“We are young and have a ton of potential,” said Monessen Florist assistant coach Mia Woytovich. “It’s really great to see them already meshing together just by playing some 3 on 3.”
