Severe storms swept through the Mon Valley and surrounding areas Monday evening, leaving trees tumbled on area roadways and many residents without power.
The National Weather Service in Pittsburgh reported a chance for severe thunderstorms in the area starting around 1 p.m.
By late afternoon, strong winds hit the area and rain began to fall, bringing down trees and other debris onto power lines in several communities.
Around 3:30 p.m., Duquesne Light tweeted that as a result of alerts of high winds, extra crews were brought on duty “to help restore any outages as quickly and safely as possible.” At 5:19 p.m., the company reported 68 outages affecting 7,026 customers.
Duquesne Light’s outage map showed there were 147 customers impacted in White Oak. The website did not include a projected time for those customers’ power to be restored.
Downed trees left a portion of the Great Allegheny Passage trail closed in the Mon/Yough Valley.
“As always when it comes to this time of year, many storms come through and cause some trees to come down,” the Mon/Yough Trail Council stated in a Facebook post. “This time we are seeing some trees down on the Loop, near Christy Park Industries. Recommending to avoid the loop at this time, downriver from Boston.”
