History-buff dads can spend Father’s Day exploring Washington County museums for free
For the MVI
A prominent Underground Railroad site. The elaborate 18th century home of the leader of the Whiskey Rebellion. A scenic trolley ride in a vintage streetcar. An archaeological dig dating back 19,000 years. An extensive local glass collection that spans over two centuries.
All of this and more is available for visitors to explore in Washington County this weekend.
The Washington County Tourism Promotion Agency, in partnership with the Washington County Heritage Alliance, announced Free Museum Day, a new event to be held at six participating museums in Washington County.
Free Museum Day will take place from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. this Sunday and all guests who participate will have the opportunity to tour the LeMoyne House, the Bradford House Museum, Pennsylvania Trolley Museum, the Whiskey Rebellion Education and Visitor Center, Meadowcroft Rockshelter and Historic Village, and the Duncan and Miller Glass Museum at no cost.
“Free Museum Day provides an incentive for visitors to experience the rich history of Washington County on Father’s Day-a day for families,” said Jeff Kotula, president of the WCTPA. “We take great pride in these museums that beautifully showcase our region’s story as well as continue to position our county as a leader in tourism in the Greater Pittsburgh area.”
To add to the fun and promote visits to multiple venues, visitors can pick up a Free Museum Day Passport at all participating museums. During Free Museum Day, visitors will receive a stamp on their passport from each museum visited. Passports with three or more stamps can be entered into a raffle for a chance to win a $250 Tanger Outlets gift card.
“These museums are gems in our community,” said Clay Kilgore, executive director of the Washington County Historical Society. “We have found that many western Pennsylvania residents have not realized that these wonderful resources are available in their very own backyards. We are hoping that Free Museum Day will encourage visitors, both local and from around the region, to take advantage of what these museums have to offer.”
Free Museum Day was an idea developed by the Washington County Tourism Promotion Agency and is funded in part by a generous grant from the Jack Buncher Foundation.
