Walter J. Hopkins, 74, of Charleroi, passed away peacefully on June 12, 2021, at Monongahela Valley Hospital. The son of the late Walter W. and June Shrader Hopkins, Walter was born on Feb. 10, 1947, in Charleroi. A graduate of Charleroi High School, Class of 1965, Walter continued his education at California State College, where he earned his bachelor’s degree in education. Walter taught social studies and math at Charleroi Area Middle School, where he impacted the lives of numerous students for 35 years. A member of Charleroi- Monongahela F&AM Lodge 337, Walter currently was serving as chairman of the board of the Authority of the Borough of Charleroi. He was a former Charleroi councilman, former president of the Charleroi Teachers Union and a member of the Class of 1965 Reunion Committee. Aside from the work he did in his local community, Walter enjoying working in his woodworking shop, building and repairing whatever anyone needed. He was an avid golfer, having golfed with his buddies in Jays Golf Club for over 50 years. But most importantly, Walter enjoyed spending time with his loving family and friends, who will miss him deeply. Surviving to cherish Walter’s memory are his loving wife of 53 years, Adele Rozzi Hopkins; daughters, Kristin Hopkins Calcek and Leanna (Derek) Spada; brother, Larry (Patty) Hopkins; and his sister, Nancy (Sheldon) Shultz; as well as his grandchildren, who meant the world to him, Ross and Raegan Calcek and Gino and Vito Spada; and his loving dog, Gypsy. In addition to his parents, Walter is preceded in death by his brother, William “Bill” Hopkins. Friends and family will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, June 16, 2021, and Thursday, June 17, at SCHROCK-HOGAN FUNERAL HOME & CREMATION SERVICES INC., 226 Fallowfield Ave., Charleroi. A blessing service will be conducted at 10 a.m. Friday June 18, in the funeral home with the Rev. Gerald Mikonis officiating. Interment will follow at Belle Vernon Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, a donation to the Charleroi Area School District Education Foundation in Walter’s name may be mailed to P.O. Box 382, Charleroi, PA 15022.
