Elizabeth Borough is getting assistance from the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development to tackle blight.
The DCED is providing a blight remediation grant of $68,310. Council President Chad Rager said the funds should allow the borough to tear down at least five or six houses.
“The average is $10,000 to $12,000 per house, usually,” Rager said.
Rager said the borough has a list of houses to be demolished, and the grant will be used to tear down the worst of those structures first.
A separate grant was received to tear down a burned house at 507 Third St., according to Councilman Andy Miklos. Minniefield Demolition Services of West Mifflin has been hired to handle that job.
“We got a grant for $20,000 to do that but it’s only going to cost $12,000 so we have money to use for some of the other houses,” Rager said.
