The first training session the Elizabeth Borough Volunteer Fire Department had with its new underwater side sonar unit resulted in the recovery of a stolen vehicle.
Elizabeth Borough Police Chief William Sombo said the sonar indicated there was a vehicle in the river during Thursday’s training involving the borough fire department along with firefighters from Greensburg, Jefferson Hills, McKeesport and Glassport.
“The instructor from Marine Sonic informed the training crews that there was a vehicle in the water at the end of the Fish and Boat Commission marine launch, located at the end of Second Avenue approximately 100 feet offshore,” Sombo said.
A search operation was planned for Sunday. Crews started the search around 8:30 a.m., with the borough police and fire department running the recovery operation. Greensburg’s special operations dive team under Dive Master George McFarland located a 2013 Dodge 2500 diesel full-size pickup truck. The truck was recovered from the river with the assistance of Nickolich Towing from Clairton, Sombo said.
