McKeesport police officers from the traffic division are going to be on the lookout for cars illegally parking on city sidewalks.
“I’m getting some constituent complaints about parking on sidewalks throughout the city,” Councilman Jim Barry Jr. said at Wednesday’s council meeting, adding that he has witnessed people parking on the sidewalk along Fifth Avenue and Walnut Street.
“My understanding is it’s moving into the neighborhoods too,” the councilman said, citing the Grandview neighborhood and Fawcett Plan.
“People just find it fashionable to park on the sidewalk,” he said, adding that pedestrians are being forced to navigate onto the street to get around parked cars.
“It’s a safety issue,” he said. “It’s busting up the sidewalks and the curbs bad, and quite honestly it just looks like hell.”
Barry wants to see sidewalk parking laws enforced.
“We’ve got to start tagging these cars,” the councilman said. “I’m not saying go out and give everyone a ticket. Give them a warning. If they keep doing it, then ticket them.
“… Something has to be done because it’s like the wild, wild west. People just think they can park wherever.”
