Frederic Feldman was known for many things in Monessen and though he’s been gone now for almost 11 years, his name will live on as a street has been named for him.
Fred Feldman Way was unveiled this month on a portion of Ninth Street where it meets Donner Avenue.
Feldman was a teacher at Monessen Junior High School until his retirement in 1973 after a 40-year career. He was a part of the Monessen Recreation program for at least 55 years, having served as director for 25 years.
Feldman was a junior high basketball coach, a senior high tennis coach and was Monessen’s Outstanding Citizen twice — in 1982 and 1998.
He was a graduate of California University of Pennsylvania, where he was captain of the 1933 basketball team. Feldman was inducted into the Cal U Athletics Hall of Fame in 2003.
Feldman was also a veteran and was honored by the Monessen Veterans Council with a lifetime achievement award in 1989.
He was a commander of VFW Post 1190 and president of the Monessen Veterans Council for 35 years. He chaired Memorial Day and Veterans Day programs for many years.
In 1984, at the Veterans Council anniversary dinner, the Valley Independent described Feldman as “The most unique emcee ever. He can always be counted upon to keep things moving, active and interesting. And, even though he has his critics, he has to be given a great deal of credit for keeping the veterans movement alive and well in Monessen.”
