Washington Township residents who’ve been upset about rumors that a Dollar General store might open in town received news they didn’t want to hear Monday.
At a township planning commission meeting, commission member Jamie Protin and Chairman Bob Bergamasco, joined by Bob Gage of GBT Realty, confirmed that GBT, a development company, has begun the process of applying for conditional use and other permits. They confirmed Dollar General intends to open a store there.
The property, which currently doesn’t house a structure, is located along Route 201 near the border of the Lynnwood section of town.
The planning commission said no completed permit applications have been received or approved by the commission or the board of supervisors, but they are expected.
Gage said GBT builds about 100 retail facilities per year that are used for dollar stores and the company, at the direction of Dollar General, is planning to submit a conditional use permit request and other permit requests to build a 10,640-square-foot store.
The residents’ group, which calls itself Washington Township Concerned Citizens, is opposed to the store being built in what they call “a bedroom community.” On Monday, the group presented the commission with a petition with 187 signatures opposing the store opening, according to Don Gray, one of the residents spearheading the campaign.
