The McKeesport Area school board unanimously voted last month to approve a tax amnesty program in an attempt to collect on delinquent real estate taxes.
The program, which is being administered by Keystone Collections Group, will waive penalties and interest on outstanding and unpaid delinquent real estate taxes from 2020 and prior.
The opportunity to take advantage of the program began Thursday and will end June 30.
Act 20 fees and previously incurred costs in the pursuit of delinquent real estate taxes are not eligible for amnesty, according to MASD Business Manager Joan Wehner.
That’s a point she and solicitor Krisha DiMascio made clear prior to the board voting.
“It’s the base amount plus the fees,” DiMascio said.
“Only penalty and interest are waived, so it would have to include base amount and any fees paid in full,” Wehner added.
Payment programs are not permitted for taxpayers who want to be absolved of penalties and interest during the amnesty period. Parcels in a payment program may be granted amnesty for outstanding tax penalty and interest when tax at face, Act 20 fees and previously incurred costs are paid in full by June 30, Wehner said.
