Because of year-long COVID-19 shutdowns, cancellations and stay-at-home orders, people have spent more time at home than ever before.
According to Washington County-based children’s agency Court Appointed Special Advocates For Children, that means child abuse and neglect have an increased chance of being undetected and unreported.
But thanks to April’s designation as Child Abuse Prevention Month and CASA’s month-long “Step Up for Kids” virtual run and walk event to raise awareness and funds for the agency, children who have been abused or neglected will soon have a chance to step out of the shadows.
The second annual event begins Thursday and continues throughout April. It lets walkers, joggers and other supporters show their appreciation to CASA for its efforts.
CASA Fundraising and Marketing Manager Gina Lynn said people participating in the event can show their support by uploading a photo or selfie of themselves finishing their walk or run.
“We ask them to do it at their own pace and at their own place,” Lynn said. “They can go out and run a full marathon if they wish.
“Last year, I had two elderly women in their 80s take a photo from their garden and they said they were gardening in support of neglected kids. It becomes whatever they want to make of it.”
