A year after losing out on her freshman outdoor track and field season due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Pitt sophomore Bri Spirnak opened the new campaign in a big way Saturday.
The Elizabeth Forward graduate picked up the win in the javelin by recording a new personal record with a throw of 158 feet, five inches (48.28 meters) at the Stan Romanoski Open in Morgantown. The heave was the fourth best in program history.
“It felt like a fresh start,” Spirnak said. “I was content with my performance considering I threw a two-meter PR and got the win for my team.”
Despite the fact that she wasn’t able to compete in her first year at Pitt, Spirnak said she didn’t look at the pandemic as a negative.
Instead, she chose to look on the bright side.
“Of course, I wanted to compete my freshman year,” she said, “but this extra year has given me time to get stronger both physically and mentally with my training.”
