Even though the COVID-19 pandemic forced the cancellation of many of its fundraisers in 2020, the Monongahela Area Revitalization Corporation continues to move forward to raise money for police vests for the Monongahela police department.
“We haven’t been able to do anything,” said MARC President George Eckert. “We opened an account to the community just for the vests and we’ve done some things on Facebook. A lot of club and private donations have come in.”
Eckert said MARC has raised $5,421 of its $6,500 goal.
“We will have the $6,500,” Eckert said. “I’d like to not stop after that.”
Eckert was alerted to the vests campaign in the fall of 2019 when Monongahela police Chief Kevin Harris contacted MARC about a federal grant in the amount of $6,500 the department received for the vests. But funds for the grant have to be matched, and the department would only receive funds that were matched.
The money also has to be used by September of this year.
“We would like to have everything in our hands by Aug. 1,” Eckert said. “That way, the police department knows how much money on their side to spend.”
But Eckert is hopeful this year brings more attention to the vests campaign as COVID cases decline and restrictions begin to ease. He said MARC has a number of events in the works.
