Belle Vernon raced out to a 10-0 lead in the first two minutes en route to a 65-28 victory over Uniontown Wednesday in nonsection girls action at Uniontown Area High School.
The Leopards (5-2, 3-1) host Southmoreland (5-2, 4-1) in a key Section 3-4A game tonight at 7:30, but head coach and Belle Vernon alum Kaitlyn Slagus was glad her team didn’t look past the Red Raiders (0-5, 0-3).
“Southmoreland is a really good team, but we didn’t even talk about them until this game was over,” Slagus said. “Every game starts 0-0 and you never know what is going to happen, so we tell them to take it one game at a time.
“We have a lot of quick guards, and the more you force them to turn the ball over, the better we are going to be. We want to utilize all the speed we have. We really focused on driving to the basket and finishing.”
The Leopards’ swarming defense forced Uniontown into turnovers that were cashed in, as Viva Kreis opened the scoring and Grace Henderson put up two inside. Taylor Rodriguez made two free throws and Tessa Rodriguez’s basket led Red Raiders head coach Penny Kezmarsky to take a timeout with 6:34 remaining.
