Charlie Richard Dickerson was called to his heavenly home on Tuesday, Jan. 19, 2021, while in the H. John Heinz III Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center. He was blessed to reach the exceptional age of 96 years. He was the baby of six children and is the last patriarch in the Dickerson family. He was born on March 7, 1924, in Cedar Hill, Tenn. He was known as and used the following names: Charlie, Charles, CR, Dad, Dad-i-o, Pap, PapPap, Uncle Charles, Mr. Dickerson, his son-in-law lovingly calls him “Dad the Governor” and we cannot forget “Honey Cake.” After leaving Tennessee he moved to Indianapolis for a short time and was inducted in the Army on June 25, 1943 and began active service on July 9, 1943. His occupation while in the service was truck driver. Battles and campaigns during his service were in Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland and Central Europe. His decorations and citations included the American Theater Campaign Ribbon with four Bronze Stars, Good Conduct Ribbon and Victory Medal of World War II. He received an honorable discharge from active duty on July 25, 1947. He was preceded in death by his parents, Irving Dickerson and Emma Johnson-Dickerson; three brothers, Henry Irving and Jake and John Dickerson; two sisters, Ida Mae and Mildred Dickerson; and a son, Steven Craig Holmes Sr. (Skookie). Charles is survived by his devoted wife of more than 60 years, Ophelia Parrish-Dickerson of Monongahela; his daughter, Charletté (Kevin) Reed of Monessen; nine grandchildren; 18 great- grandchildren; five great- great-grandchildren; several cousins, nephews, nieces and family friends whom he loved, and they will also miss him dearly. Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. to noon Wednesday, Jan. 27, 2021, at Christian Life Ministries, 1201 Patton Ave., Monessen, followed by funeral services at noon.
