The night before Wednesday’s signing day ceremony, Colin Lyons couldn’t help but reminisce.
Lyons, a 6-5, 275-pound McKeesport football standout, thought about all the hard work he forced himself to do during his lengthy career on the gridiron.
He couldn’t help but take pride in the fact that it all paid off in the form of an opportunity to play at the next level.
Surrounded by family and friends, Lyons signed his national letter of intent to continue his academic and football careers at the University of Akron. Lyons will play for head coach Tom Arth and the Zips, who are in the Mid-American Conference.
“Signing day was overall an incredible feeling,” said Lyons, the son of Tim and Chari Lyons of Irwin. “All of the hard work paid off, but it’s time to get back to work.”
Lyons had 10 other offers and strongly considered Youngstown State and the U.S. Naval Academy.
“Akron stood out to me because it was the best fit for me academically and athletically,” said Lyons, who plans to major in physical education. “The coaches were super passionate about wanting to be great, which I loved.”
