New Eagle council members and the borough’s street crew reached a deal on a new contract Tuesday, but the decision wasn’t without controversy.
Council members voted 3-2 to approve the tentative agreement with the Teamsters Union, which provides for a one-year contract.
Saundra Bobnar, Tanya Chaney and Dennis Walters voted yes on the motion, while Jack Fine and Barry Williams opposed it.
The new contract is for Jan. 1 to Dec. 31, 2021. The previous contract ran from 2016 to the end of this year.
Williams didn’t like that workers will get two paid half-days throughout the year, saying they aren’t necessary because workers “don’t do diddly,” when they’re scheduled to work a half day.
Solicitor Tim Berggren said the contract has always included paid half days.
“We’ve always done the contract like that,” he said. “We’ve never addressed it.”
Council was happy that the new contract saves the borough approximately $25,000 in health benefits.
“We got something and we gave something,” Berggren said. “We think we got more than what we gave.”
