Mistakes, size mismatch costs Frazier in loss to Waynesburg

For the Frazier girls basketball team, getting on the court Friday night represented a victory of sorts, even if the team came up short on the scoreboard.
With new coronavirus restrictions set to go into effect on Saturday, the Commodores were able to see some of their hard work in practice pay off as they were able to squeeze in a season-opening nonsection home game against Waynesburg before high school sports officially go on pause until at least Jan. 4.
The Commodores struggled to handle Waynesburg’s size advantage inside and the Raiders were able to force Frazier into some mistakes on their way to a 62-36 victory.
“We knew, especially from playing them last year, that they would give us full-court pressure,” Frazier coach Winston Shaulis said. “But that is something that we will improve on.”
Waynesburg (1-0) controlled much of the game, beginning with the opening eight minutes as the Raiders rolled to a 20-11 lead after one quarter.
Kaley Rohanna knocked down four buckets in the opening frame, and she was complemented nicely by Nina Sarra and CP Miller.
Miller led all scorers with a 25-point effort while Rohanna and Nina Sarra were next in line, each finishing with 14 points.
The Commodores, to their credit, stayed in it early as Kaelyn Shaporka buried a long-range 3-pointer to pull Frazier (0-1) to within nine points heading to the second quarter.
Shaporka finished with a team-high 17 points.
“She was put into some positions where she was trying to do too much,” Shaulis said of Shaporka. “But she was trying to step up and she really crashed the boards for us.”
