The COVID-19 pandemic will not stop Santa Claus from spreading holiday cheer in Monongahela this holiday season.
The Monongahela Area Chamber of Commerce is preparing for its annual tri-community holiday light-up celebration, “Santa Claus is Shopping in Town,” to be held at 5:30 p.m. Friday. Streets and businesses in Monongahela, Carroll Township and New Eagle will come alive with the sights and sounds of the season.
In its 10th year, the event will feature local DJs along Main Street playing holiday music and a Christmas concert in Chess Park.
Luminaries will light the way from Lenzi’s Service Station to the Pizza Station in New Eagle, Christmas trees donated by Lone Oak Farm will be on display and most local businesses will host open houses and raffles with prize giveaways. The Dance Company by Miss Lori of New Eagle will entertain throughout the community, food vendors will be on site and there will be barrel train rides for children in Chess Park.
The main attraction, Santa Claus, will arrive at Chess Park to light the community Christmas tree at 6:10 p.m. Then he’ll stroll along Main Street where he will stop at his home in front of Community Bank. Santa plans to hand out 300 treat bags to children.
“Most of our residents were asking for months if we were going to have a light-up celebration,” said Monongahela Chamber of Commerce Vice President and Sparkles by Shell owner Michelle DeHosse. “Everything has been shut down and people have been avoiding each other. I think people just really want to get out. That’s been a big topic of conversation. People look forward to it.”
