The North Belle Vernon Recreation Commission is planning for its last event of the year this weekend.
The annual Light Up the Night celebration will welcome Santa to town 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday at North Belle Vernon’s Community Bank Park.
Unlike years past, the pandemic has forced organizers to deviate a little from tradition to ensure the safety of guests.
“We will not be serving hot chocolate or hot dogs this year because of the pandemic,” organizer Lynn Sokol said. “We also won’t be having children sit on Santa’s lap, but will have them sit socially distanced at a table with Santa who will be wearing his mask.”
Instead of treat bags this year, children will each be given coupon books — while supplies last — from McDonald’s and Wendy’s.
Social distancing and COVID-19 protocols are encouraged.
There will be a bonfire and Christmas music to get everyone in the holiday spirit.
The dek hockey rink and play areas will be open.
Sokol said organizers did not want the pandemic to break tradition.
“This has been a tradition here for as long as I can remember,” Sokol said, adding “At least for 30 years.
“We want the children of the Mon Valley to have a normal Christmas. We didn’t want COVID-19 to stop us from spreading Christmas cheer or to take away joy from our children.”
Santa will be available for socially-distanced pictures.
“We are hoping residents feel comfortable enough to come out and have a good time as usual,” Sokol said. “We have decorated and are ready for Santa to come and bring us a little Christmas joy.”
The event will be held rain or shine and is open to residents from all communities throughout the Mon Valley.

“This will be the last event of a very unique year for us,” Sokol said. “We wanted to do something and still make sure everyone has a good holiday.”
