Warriors look to end playoff losing skid

The Elizabeth Forward football program is currently in the midst of a lengthy drought.

While they have advanced to the playoffs seven times since 2003, the Warriors have not won a playoff game since the late 1990s.

This year’s group is aware of how long it has been.

But they’re more focused on the recent drought of three consecutive berths with no playoff triumphs under head coach Mike Collodi.

“I remind them every day that we’ve made three straight playoff appearances with zero wins,” Collodi said. “I’ve reminded them that for Nico (Mrvos), Chase (Whatton) and the other seniors out there, it’s lose and go home now, so at 10 o’clock Friday, we could either be celebrating or turning in our equipment. It’s up to them and hopefully they want to continue this season and continue doing something special.”

Third-seeded Elizabeth Forward once again has an opportunity to end its struggles when it hosts No. 6 Freeport in the WPIAL Class 3A quarterfinals at Warrior Stadium.

The Warriors (6-0) and the Yellowjackets (3-2) will meet for the third consecutive year after spending two seasons together in Class 3A’s Big East Conference. EF has won each of the last two meetings, capturing a 27-21 triumph in 2018 and a 31-13 victory last season.
