GCC cruises past Cougars

Charleroi’s girls soccer season came to an end Monday with a 6-0 defeat at the hands of Class A powerhouse Greensburg Central Catholic in nonsection action at Myron Pottios Stadium.

The Centurions (11-0) proved why they’re one of the top teams in the classification, scoring four of their goals in the first half and firing 38 total shots toward the net.

“We tried to put Boots (DeUnger) and Bella (Carroto) back to play more of a defensive game, but that comes to bites you in the butt, too, because you lose that offense,” Charleroi head coach Traci Fleming said. “Our key was to just try and keep them off the board.”

While Fleming attempted to solidify her back line by adding forwards Boots DeUnger and Bella Carroto to a unit that also includes standout Taylor Ramsdell, the Centurions couldn’t be denied.

Samantha Felder and Tatum Gretz each found the back of the net twice for GCC, while Sara Felder and Jessica Nemeth added goals in the victory.

“They still got more shots off than I wanted and we looked a little flat in those first 15, 20 minutes,” Fleming said. “I think the girls were a little bit timid. GCC has that name coming into the game and I told them we didn’t have anything to lose. I told them to just go out and play. Our goal was to play as hard as we could for the last game. The score doesn’t always show it, but I don’t think we played that bad.”
