The Salvation Army in Monessen is kicking off a popular campaign early this year.
The drive usually starts Nov. 1 and builds momentum leading up to Thanksgiving.
Each year, volunteers with seasonal bells stand alongside the famous red kettles at locations across the Valley to raise money for programs provided by the Salvation Army.
This year, the organization is having a virtual 5K Fun Run to kick off and hopefully save the season of giving.
The safe, socially distanced Red Kettle run is set for Oct. 10 at Palmer Park in Donora.
Funds raised will support the Red Kettle Campaign, which provides families and individuals in need with services such as emergency food, rental and utility support and other basic needs.
With the COVID-19 pandemic still wreaking havoc on families and businesses, Capt. Sue Thwaite said the campaign will be vital.
“This year, your participation is needed more than ever as our communities continue to deal with the financial impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic,” she said. “There is no quarantine from hunger, no quarantine from a lost job and no quarantine from poverty.
“Your participation will save our season.”
Thwaite said the Red Kettle drive brings in at least $60,000 each year. The pandemic will change the way money is raised.
