Long fight for city water pays off

After more than 35 years, a Fallowfield Township family has access to city water.
Philip Caldwell and his family have lived on Old Route 71 for decades. He bought their home in the mid-1980s and at the time was told by local officials there was not a way to tap into the water system.
For decades, he had to have trucks of water brought in to use in the home.
“My wife and I raised four daughters here; that is five women in this house,” he said. “That is a lot of water.”
A load, which costs about $65, would be dropped off once each week to use for household tasks. The family used bottled water and a Culligan Water filtration system for cooking and drinking.
For years, as both water and sewer projects began to pop up through Fallowfield Township and surrounding communities, Caldwell continued to press the issue.
“It was a fight for a long time,” he said. “There was always an excuse, not enough money, some reason my house could not be tapped into the system.”
