Cougars, Commodores ready to roll

Charleroi’s Brady Barbero and Frazier’s Greg Boggs are just excited to get back on the gridiron.

Now don’t get the wrong idea; both head coaches badly want their teams to win the Century Conference opener Friday when the Commodores host Barbero’s Cougars at 7 p.m., but with the COVID-19 pandemic and uncertainty that fall sports would even be played, the two coaches agreed that it is nice to be back in a meaningful game.

“There was so much uncertainty throughout the summer,” Barbero said. “We went through our workouts, but we weren’t sure if we were going to be able to play. We kind of got our feet wet with our scrimmage last week, and we are really looking forward to Friday and starting the season off.

“In regards to not having spectators in attendance, we worry about what we can control, but unfortunately, that is something that we can’t. We are just trying to focus on what we can do and how we can make our team better. We all want to see the parents there, and hopefully, that will be happening soon.”

“We appreciate the chance that we can play on Friday,” Boggs said. “We are excited to play Charleroi because they are right down the road. I have good memories of Charleroi. I spent some time there. We have a great student section, so it will be unfortunate that we won’t be able to have many fans in the stands.”

Charleroi is on a three-game winning streak against Frazier. The Cougars won last year, 45-6, earned a 56-7 victory in 2018 and picked up a 34-20 triumph in 2017. The Commodores last win was in 2016, 38-6.

“They’ve had our number, and we hope that we can get a victory over them Friday,” said Boggs in reference to Charleroi’s streak over his team. “I think both teams are looking forward to this game.”
