AMD Industries routs Edward Jones

A week away from the basketball court at Marx’s Court Time Sports Center didn’t seem to bother first-place AMD Industries Monday night.

The lone remaining undefeated team in the Mon Valley Independent Summer Basketball League, AMD returned from the league-mandated one-week hiatus to capture a 74-36 victory over Edward Jones in Elizabeth Township.

“They fight and a lot of these girls play high school and AAU, so it really wasn’t a week off for them,” AMD coach Bria Rathway said. “I think in the first couple of minutes we definitely saw the effects of not having played together in a week, but once they were aggressive and got some easy steals and easy baskets, that’s what they fed off of.”

There was no stopping AMD’s Eden Williamson and Kaylin Venick.

The Trinity standouts entered Monday as two of the top four scorers in the girls division and easily proved why, scoring 24 and 21 points respectively to lead the way for AMD (3-0). Williamson, who scored 11 and 15 points in her first two games, had 17 by halftime. Venick scored 15 by the break.

“They’re scary and just sitting back and watching them, I would hate to be any team playing them,” Rathway said. “They each have high basketball IQs and that’s so important in today’s game. They know when to pull up, they know when to make the extra pass or drive in, and they’re such good team players.

“They’re having fun out there and they’re smiling, and that’s what this league is about, having fun and getting better.”
