Whitlock’s heroics lead Farmers past UC

Sometimes it isn’t about how many points you score. It’s when you score that’s important.

A case in point would be Farmers Insurance’s Devin Whitlock, who scored just six points, including a putback of his own miss with eight seconds left Thursday in a 52-50 win over Union Cleaners at Marx’s Court Time Sports Center in Elizabeth Township.

Despite the fact that he only finished with three buckets, Whitlock’s teammates backed him up on the scoreboard. Omar Faulkner notched a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds. He also had five blocks. Caleb Palumbo also hit double figures with 11 points.

“Devin did other things for us tonight,” said Farmers coach Dana Zajicek. “He rebounded, he played defense and he did a good job on Nate English tonight. He gave us other aspects of the game. He’s hard nosed, he’s always there.”

Doing a “good job” on English meant holding him to 25 points. The main problem from Union Cleaners was foul shooting and rebounding.

“We were 6 of 16 from the foul line and the rebounding killed us early,” said Union Cleaners coach Kevin Kovach. “In the second half, we rebounded great except for the last play where the smallest guy on the court got his own rebound and made the shot.”
