Before the COVID-19 pandemic wiped out the spring sports season, Koby Bubash was making his mark as a freshman on the Slippery Rock University baseball team.
The Ringgold graduate had played in six games, hitting .429 with three RBIs, six runs scored and three extra base hits.
With sports returning, Bubash won’t just be making his presence felt while playing for Jefferson Hills in the National Adult Baseball Association. He will also be found standing in the first base coaching box for a local summer league team.
Bubash is spending a portion of his summer vacation as first base coach for the Mon City Rams in the Western Pennsylvania Summer Baseball League. He is serving on the coaching staff of Don Roberts, Bubash’s former high school coach.
“It is extremely exciting, especially getting my foot in the door with coaching and coaching for my alma mater,” Bubash said. “It’s a good experience coaching with the coaches I played for for four years.”
After seeing his first year of collegiate ball canceled prematurely, Bubash was originally slated to play for the Piedmont Pride out of South Carolina in the Southern Collegiate League. Due to the coronavirus, the league was postponed and Bubash decided to play in the NABA while working for the Carroll Township Street Department and coaching with Mon City in the newly formed WPSBL.
“I’ve always wanted to coach, and when coach Roberts gave me the opportunity to coach with him, I felt that it was a great opportunity and a good start,” Bubash said. “Coaching really makes me realize that there are many more situations in baseball than you think when you’re just playing, and it’s nice to be able to see that and coach our team through them.”
