Pitching, steady offense lead Thomas Jefferson past Belle Vernon

Pitching isn’t something Thomas Jefferson coach Tim Vickers thinks he would have lacked had there been a spring baseball season.
“We knew our pitching staff was pretty good,” Vickers said. “That only adds to our frustration in this year being gone.”
The COVID-19 pandemic may have wiped out what could have very well been a special season for TJ, but Vickers is still able to watch his group of hurlers put in work.
Four TJ pitchers combined to strike out 17 batters and surrender just two hits in a convincing 11-2 victory over Belle Vernon Monday night in a Western Pennsylvania Summer Baseball League matchup at the DiVirgilio Sports Complex in Rostraver Township.
Starter Cam Dimidjian and relievers McClain Flinn and Dylan Mallozzi each tossed two innings in the win, while Ryan Sulk threw a scoreless fifth inning in relief, striking out a pair.
Dimidjian, a Cal U recruit, allowed two runs on one hit while walking two and punching out four. Flinn gave up a hit, had two walks and compiled five strikeouts. Mallozzi closed out the game by throwing the final two innings. He walked one and struck out six for TJ (1-0).
“I like what we did there because we went lefty, righty, lefty, righty. We changed velocities back and forth, too,” Vickers said. “Every one of them has command of at least two pitches and they feed off of each other. They compete together, they root for each other and they just want to get better.
“It’s fun to watch, but at the same time, it’s depressing knowing what could have been.”
