Mon City turned an early five-run deficit into a lopsided win Wednesday night, cruising past Belle Vernon, 10-6, in the opening game of the Western Pennsylvania Baseball League at the DiVirgilio Sports Complex in Rostraver Township.
The Rams (1-0), who trailed by five after a six-run second inning by Belle Vernon (0-1), scored nine unanswered runs in the win, plating four in both the fourth and fifth innings.
“We pulled them aside after that big inning and we said, ‘Look, you have five more innings to chip away,’” Mon City coach Don Roberts said. “We know that if we just play good defense and pitch well, there are going to be a lot of games we can claw back into.”
While the offense did its job, the Rams relied on the right arm of freshman Lorenzo Glasser to shut down the Leopards.
Glasser tossed five shutout innings, allowing just two hits, walking one and striking out five. He relieved starting pitcher Nate Pajak, who allowed six runs on five hits while walking a pair in one inning of work.
“I just wanted to go in, be unpredictable, throw strikes and keep them off balanced,” Glasser said. “I wanted to keep my composure and keep calm.
“We have a great group of guys out there and I’m glad to have a great defense behind me. They help a lot.”
