White Oak debates Heritage Pool opening

White Oak borough still isn’t ready to make a call about whether Heritage Hill Pool will open this summer.

Borough Manager John Palyo explained during Monday’s virtual meeting that the pool legally cannot open until Allegheny County moves to the green phase of reopening.

He expects the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the state and county departments of health to issue guidelines and restrictions about if and how public pools can open.

Palyo expects those restrictions to come with limits on how many people can be admitted into the pool at one time and to require lifeguards and pool employees to be trained to comply with CDC and DOH guidelines.

He said Heritage Hill Pool lifeguards need to obtain recertification from the American Red Cross, but cannot do so because the organization has put a freeze on certification courses until pandemic restrictions are lifted.

Palyo and engineer Ken Hillman said there are other factors contributing to the borough’s inability to make a call about the pool season.
