McKeesport to ‘Light the Night for Seniors’

Pennsylvania schools are closed for the remainder of the academic year and high school seniors have been left unsure if they will have a commencement ceremony and special events such as the prom.

To ease their worries, McKeesport Area School District administrators this week planned ways to show senior students their school district cares about them.

The district is calling on McKeesport Tigers near and far to “Light the Night for Seniors.”

“On May 8, our senior class would have been completing their senior project presentations,” Assistant Superintendent Dr. Tia Wanzo said. “It is a special day for not only the students, but the staff and retirees who participate as well.

“To commemorate this day and lift up our senior class, we invite our MASD community to light up the front of their homes and porches from 9-10 p.m. on May 8 to show our seniors that they care and support them now and into the future.”

Those who want to participate can simply turn on their flashlights, porch or cellphone lights or decorate their porches and yards with lights. Participants are asked to snap a photo of themselves and their lights and send it to the district via Facebook messenger. Photos can also be posted to social media with #McKeesportStrong in the post.

Wanzo invites MASD alumni who live out of town to participate.

“It is important that we do our best to lift the spirits of all of our students, especially our seniors who are missing out on some memorable experiences during this pandemic,” she said.
