“The one thing I am most proud of is I care about people.”
That’s the quote at the top of former Fayette County Commissioner Vince Zapotosky’s Facebook page and is perhaps the most fitting epitaph anyone could have written for the man being remembered as a dedicated family man and public servant.
Zapotosky, 56, died at his home earlier this week after a lengthy battle with lung problems, including asthma and COPD. Fayette County Coroner Philip Reilly said an autopsy will be conducted to provide peace of mind to Zapotosky’s family.
Funeral arrangements have not been announced. He leaves behind his wife Carol and son Will.
State Rep. Pam Snyder, D-Jefferson, worked with Zapotosky for eight years when they were aides to U.S. Rep. Frank Mascara from 1994-2002. They worked together in Mascara’s Charleroi office, Snyder said. Zapotosky had also served as an aide to U.S. Rep. Austin Murphy.
“We would always be the first two in the office. I would get the coffee going and we would talk,” Snyder said. “Vince was such a good public servant. He was so good at constituent services, especially immigration issues or if someone was stuck in another country. That was his wheelhouse.”
