A riverfront park in Charleroi is one step closer to becoming a reality.

On Thursday, the Mon Valley Alliance Foundation, a nonprofit arm of Mon Valley Alliance, began seeking proposals for the final design, construction drawings and bid specifications for Phase I of its Magic City Riverfront Park.

The project will be constructed on Second Street, the former site of Cougar Stadium.

Demolition of the stadium began in May 2018 using a portion of $252,000 in Local Share Account funding secured by the Alliance for the Charleroi Renaissance Project. Tearing down the stadium was the first phase of that project.

That involved removing lighting, light pole bases, a wall in front of the property, chain-link fencing, goal posts, netting, scoreboard, a storage building and railings.

The bid for demolition came in under budget, and the Alliance sought approval to use the remaining funding to begin rehabilitating the area to increase river accessibility.
