Alyssa DeAngelo wasn’t just going to sit back and let there be a chance her high school career could come to an end Saturday afternoon.
The senior standout made her presence felt in a big way, scoring 17 of her game-high 30 points in the second half to lead fifth-seeded Thomas Jefferson to a 56-44 victory over fourth-seeded Oakland Catholic in a WPIAL Class 5A quarterfinal matchup at Canon-McMillan High School.
DeAngelo took over in the fourth quarter, scoring 13 of her team’s 17 points. She hit a layup and a pair of jumpers in the first five minutes before going 7 for 8 from the free throw line in the final 1:52 of the victory, which avenged a 58-41 non-section loss to the Eagles on Dec. 29.
“No one wants to end their senior year with a loss,” DeAngelo said. “We lost to them at Christmas by 17, so coming in, I was ready for revenge and I know my teammates were, too. That definitely showed today.”
