McKeesport’s quest for a WPIAL Class 5A championship begins tonight when the fifth-seeded Tigers take on No. 12 West Allegheny in an 8 p.m. first-round playoff matchup at North Allegheny High School.

The Tigers (12-10) enter the playoffs as the second-place team from Section 1. They won four of their last six games to end the regular season, a stretch that included a season-best three-game winning streak.

“I feel like we’re pretty focused,” McKeesport head coach Kevin Kovach said. “There is a feeling that maybe we did some screwing around here and there at different points during the year, but everybody is on the same page and competing hard.

“We did our own scrimmage this year instead of scrimmaging other teams, we did a split-squad and they really got after each other. They supported each other, too, so I feel like everything is meshing for us right now.”
