For Thomas Jefferson’s Ashley Guidone, playing in the J. Budd Grebb Memorial Summer Basketball League was a game changer.
She said it was pivotal for the development of her game. Now, she’s committed to playing at the collegiate level after signing her national letter of intent to play at Division III Chatham University in Pittsburgh.
The Cougars are coming off a 12-9 season, going 5-8 in Presidents Athletic Conference play.
“The top reason I chose Chatham is because it felt like home,” Guidone said. “The campus is beautiful and I love the positive environment it offers.”
Guidone said she plans on majoring in exercise science and pursuing employment in occupational or physical therapy.
“The Shadyside campus is tucked away in a wooded setting and close to Oakland. Coach (David) Saur was been so amazing through this process and I’m really looking forward to playing for a coach like him.”
While she’s learned a lot of the game through former head coach George Vlassich at Thomas Jefferson and her AAU coach Rich Griffin, she said playing in the Grebb League for former Belle Vernon Area and Carlow player, and now assistant coach, Bria Rathway really brought out her best.
“Coach Rathway really brought out my leadership skills and was so motivational,” Guidone said. “She helped me learn how important it was to focus on the next play. I give so much credit to all of these great coaches who made me the player and person I am today.”
