John Sawa Jr., 77, of Carroll Township, died Thursday, Feb. 6, 2020, at his home. He was born in New Eagle on Aug. 26, 1942, the son of the late John J. Sawa and the late Caroline Kapty Sawa. He was a member of the St. Andrew the Apostle Parish. John started his teaching career in 1964 and became an administrator/principal from 1996 until he retired in 2005. He was an avid Titanic enthusiast and gave many talks and demonstrations to his students, as well as several public talks on this subject. He was active at the former St. Mary’s and St. Dominic churches and was on the parish council for many years. He was a member of CYS and on the board of directors. In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by a son, John Sawa on Feb. 6, 2013; a sister, Patricia Greenleaf; and a brother, Eugene Sawa. Surviving to cherish his memory are his wife, Claudia Rodjom Sawa; a daughter, Amy Wooley and her fiancé Richard Schran; seven grandchildren, Brittany Wooley, Zachery Wooley, Sarah Wooley, James Schran, Nicholas Schran, Shelby Schran and Emily Schran; and a great-granddaughter, Adelynn Schran. Arrangements have been entrusted to Anthony L. Massafra Funeral Home and Cremation Service Inc., 40 Second St. Ext., Donora, PA 15033, 724-379-6900, where a remembrance gathering will be held from 2 to 6 p.m., Friday, Feb. 14, 2020. A funeral service will follow in the funeral home at 6 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations will be accepted to help with funeral arrangements.
