With reports of the emerging coronavirus — also called 2019-nCoV — making its way from China to the U.S. within the past week, residents in the Mon Valley may be wondering if the virus will hit close to home.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the virus was first detected in Wuhan City, Hubei Province, China and continues to expand. The CDC reported the first confirmed instance of person-to-person spread on Thursday, the same day the International Health Regulations Emergency Committee of the World Health Organization declared the outbreak a “public health emergency of international concern.”
The CDC reports the virus, which mimics cold and flu symptoms, has killed more than 420 people and infected more than 17,000 in China.
