Elementary students at Madonna Catholic Regional School are getting an opportunity usually reserved for older students — they are working with an artist in residence to create a mural.
The Madonna on the Mon mural will be installed in the entrance of the school when it is completed later this year. The first-, second- and third-grade students have been working on the mixed-media mural alongside professional artist Michelle Sabol, who is based in Pittsburgh.
“They’re doing all the artwork. She’s guiding them,” said Kathy Miller, principal at the school that has 116 students in preschool through eighth grade.
Miller said the students will complete work on the mural in May. It will include mosaic-like elements, many of them from recycled elements, created by the children.
“The kids made clay, then they made flowers from the clay. They made beads from newspaper,” Miller said.
The mural will also feature a decorative border of painted metal bottle caps the students have put together.
Miller said the students will literally be putting themselves into their work.
“Each of the students is actually going to be featured in the mural as an angel,” Miller said.
