A Monongahela business is holding an online fundraiser for the family of a paramedic recently killed in the line of duty while responding to a crash on Interstate 70.
Sparkles By Shell in Monongahela has already surpassed its goal in the fundraiser that began a week ago and is hoping for ongoing support.
Matthew Smelser, 43, was struck and killed by a tractor-trailer after stepping out of his ambulance to assist with a Jan. 5 crash on the interstate near the Smithton exit.
The fundraiser was launched Jan. 19 with approval from the family and RWNES.
Sparkles by Shell owner, Michelle DeHosse said Heather Gwaley approached the business after his Smelser’s death in hopes of helping his wife and two small children.
