It is hard to find teams more dedicated to some of the basic fundamentals of the game than the South Allegheny boys squad.
Playing defense, hustling, converting at the free throw line and unselfishness has paid dividends for the Gladiators this season.
South Allegheny continued to roll through Section 3-3A Thursday, taking down Deer Lakes, 65-41, to remain perfect in the section.
The Gladiators’ (13-1, 7-0) defense held the Lancers to 34% shooting and didn’t allow them to score on more than two consecutive possessions. Deer Lakes committed 16 turnovers.
Meanwhile, SA shot 13 of 14 at the charity stripe and six players scored at least seven points.
“That is what our staple and our identity is. We pride ourselves on the defensive end,” said Gladiators coach Tony DiCenzo. “You’re not always going to shoot the ball well or have success on offense, but your effort on defense, that’s what you can control.”
