Residents get advice on U.S. Steel settlement

At least one of U.S. Steel’s legal battles over the Clairton Coke Works may soon be coming to a conclusion.

On Dec. 4, the company reached a proposed settlement agreement with a group of Clairton residents who brought a class-action lawsuit claiming the plant’s air pollution emissions hindered their ability to enjoy their property because the air smelled bad or was unsafe for them to breathe, according to Fair Shake Environmental Legal Services.

Around 5,600 residents who live in Mon Valley towns could be the beneficiaries of settlement money if the agreement is approved in court next month.

Fair Shake Environmental, a Pittsburgh-based nonprofit legal services firm, is not representing the defendants or the plaintiffs in the class-action case, nor is it designated as class council. The organization held a free legal clinic at Clairton City Hall Thursday in partnership with Clean Water Action and Women for a Healthy Environment to provide “critical information” and one-on-one time with an attorney for residents “who may unknowingly be involved in a class-action lawsuit against U.S. Steel’s Clairton Coke Works,” according to Fair Shake spokesman Josh Eisenfeld.

Another session will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the same location.
