The high school wrestling season opened this past weekend and seven local teams were in action.

Eastern Area Invitational

At Gateway High School, McKeesport sophomore Dale Moehring started his high school career by winning gold in the heavyweight bracket.

Moehring, the No. 4 seed, pinned Altoona’s Adam Fort, the No. 3 seed, in 18 seconds in the final. This followed a second period pin of top-seeded Stone Joseph from Kiski Area in the semifinals.

“DJ (Moehring) was focused this whole week in practice and was determined to start his high school career the right way in this tournament,” said Tigers coach Adam Alfer. “Pinning his way through the tournament, I’d say is a great start for him. He’s definitely going to be something special. He works really hard and is very humble.”
