McKeesport Area School Board voted 9-1 to hire a state trooper as chief of the district police force.
Board President Joe Lopretto and directors James Brown, Diane Elias, Tom Filotei, Ivan Hampton, Steve Kondrosky, Jim Poston and Mindy Sturgess all voted to hire Pennsylvania state Trooper Bob Boyle as district police chief during a recent reorganization meeting. Director David Donato cast the lone no vote.
A White Oak resident, Boyle is the first hire to the newly formed district police force. His annual salary is set at $55,000. He is expected to retire from his current position as a state trooper stationed in Gibsonia within the next month, district spokeswoman Kristen James said.
Boyle’s official start date with MASD’s police force will likely be announced in January, James said.
Boyle’s hiring comes in the wake of the board’s decision in May to create the police chief position and hire one police officer for the in-house police department. The board voted last week to advertise for two more full-time police officer positions.
