It took months of campaigning, a tie after the Nov. 5 general election, a missing vote from Gill Hall VFC, a recount that ended with her losing by one vote and a council president resigning unexpectedly, but Jefferson Hills resident Melissa Girman-Steffey is now a councilwoman.
Steffey was sworn in by Magisterial District Judge Michael Thatcher at Monday’s council meeting after council voted unanimously to have her fill the seat left vacant after the Dec. 4 resignation of then-president Christopher King. At that meeting, borough manager John Stinner announced that due to King’s resignation, he would take letters of interest from residents wishing to fill King’s seat on council. The deadline for letters of interest was 4 p.m. Dec. 6.
Councilwoman Kathleen Reynolds was absent from the meeting.
Prior to being named to council, Steffey, a Republican, served on the Jefferson Hills Recreation Board for the past nine years — a position she will have to now relinquish. She is a full-time realtor and is married with three kids.
