Forward Twp. OKs incentive for firefighters

The Forward Township supervisors adopted a resolution Monday that would allow volunteer firefighters in the township to receive a tax credit of up to $250 for their service.

To qualify for the tax credit, a firefighter must be a member of the department for the 12 months preceding the calendar year for which the tax credit is sought. In addition, the fire chief must certify that the person has met three of the four criteria: answering 30 percent of fire calls, attending 50 percent of the regularly scheduled meetings in a year, attending 50 percent of the training exercises and participating in at least 50 percent of all fundraising activities, with a minimum of three hours for each activity.

Commissioners said the resolution is designed to help fire departments attract more volunteers.

“This is becoming a regional problem, the lack of volunteers,” said Dave Magiske, vice chairman of the supervisors. “Hopefully this will move some people to join.”
