In December 2015, Jason Togyer took two weeks of vacation to meet with funeral directors in McKeesport and nearby towns in the Mon Valley.
The city’s 131-year-old newspaper, The Daily News, was set to close Dec. 31 and Togyer, a McKeesport native who had worked there and at other papers in the region, knew obituaries would be among the staples readers would miss most when it stopped publishing.
So on Jan. 1, 2016, he started posting daily death notices from McKeesport and nearby towns in the Tube City Almanac, an online site he had launched 20 years earlier as a hobby.
Since the demise of The Daily News, the nonprofit venture has added crime reports, more local government news and feature stories to help close the gap in coverage.
