John G. ‘Jack’ Green – Charleroi
John G. “Jack” Green, 88, of Charleroi, passed away Sunday, Aug. 18, 2019, in The Residence at Hilltop, Carroll Township. Jack was born Nov. 11, 1930, in Speers, the son of the late Gilbert and Daisy Warnick Green. Jack grew up in Speers and attended Charleroi High School where he earned 11 varsity letters: four in both football and baseball and three in basketball. He was an All Mon-Valley selection in football, the recipient of the Leslie Morgan award as the schools outstanding athlete and was the captain or co-captain of all three sports his senior year. After graduating from Charleroi High School in 1949, Jack attended Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, on an athletic football scholarship. While at Duquesne University, Jack lettered in both football and baseball as a freshman. Sadly, Duquesne University dropped the football program in 1950 and Jack was forced to leave school. Jack was called to serve in the U.S. Army during the Korean War from 1952 to 1954 and was stationed in Germany as part of the 7th Army artillery unit. After his discharge from the Army, Jack began working at the Pittsburgh Steel Company in Monessen. With the encouragement from several managers and supervisors, Jack returned to Duquesne University to complete his Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration, graduating in 1959. During this time Jack played on many sandlot baseball teams in and around the Mon-Valley area. In 1959, Jack turned in his baseball glove for a whistle and striped shirt, officiating both high school football and basketball as well as college football games until 1978, when a heart condition forced him off of the playing field. Not willing to give up his involvement in the game, Jack became the official clock operator for West Virginia University and Ringgold High School from 1978 to 1986. Jack was a member of the Eastern Association of Intercollegiate Football Officials, Mon-Valley Chapter. Jack had been inducted into the Charleroi High School Football Hall of Fame, the Charleroi High School All Sports Hall of Fame and the Mid Mon-Valley All Sports Hall of Fame. Upon his retirement from Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel in 1986, he opened Jack Green’s Video World in Charleroi which he owned and operated until 2000. Jack was an avid golfer and a member of Mon-Valley Country Club, serving on the Board of Directors for several terms. He was a member of Charleroi Elk Lodge No. 494 and a member of the Charleroi-Monongahela Lodge No. 337 F. & A.M. Jack was a life-long and dedicated member of Christ Lutheran Church in Charleroi, serving for many years as the Sunday school superintendent and on the church council. Jack was married for 67 years to his high school sweetheart, Beverly Ann Bassi. In addition to his wife, Jack was survived by his son, John G. “Jack” Green II and wife Kathleen of Delmont; his daughter Debra Corridoni and husband Anthony of Zelienople; four grandchildren, Maria Corridoni, Amanda Toal and husband Richard, Kaitlyn Petrakis and husband Brian and Matthew Green; three great-grandchildren, Gabriella, Richard and Penelope Toal. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Jack was preceded in death by his five sisters, Mary Ruth Kifer, Wilma Poteray, Helen Beck, Lois Sauritch and Carol Kane; and his two brothers, Frank Green and Robert Green. Friends will be received Wednesday from noon to 2 p.m. and 5 to 8 p.m. at SCHROCK-HOGAN FUNERAL HOME & CREMATION SERVICES INC., 226 Fallowfield Ave., Charleroi. Funeral services will be held at 11a.m. Thursday in Christ Lutheran Church, Sixth Street and Washington Ave, Charleroi, with Pastor Matthew Stabe officiating.
